Ray Chase
November 7, 2019
Flying his hot air balloon was what he enjoyed because of the peace and quiet and the birds eye views. Ray was most relaxed flying his balloon. Ray was a commercial hot air balloon pilot. He was involved in ballooning since 1983. Ray got involved with ballooning because it was something his family could enjoy together. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of ballooning in teaching others the sport, including his children and grandchildren. He inspired a crew member from St. Jean-sur-Richelieu Canada to become a pilot. His favorite places to fly were Shawnee on the Delaware, Lancaster, Conyngham Valley, the Poconos, St. Jean-sur-Richelieu Canada, and Albuquerque International balloon festival. He enjoyed meeting and becoming friends with balloonist throughout the world.
Ray’s other passion was the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department. Ray was an EMT, Dive Captain of the Moscow Dive team. He enjoyed helping with the monthly pancake breakfasts, Chicken BBQ’s, and any other fund raisers the Fire Company had. He was a member of the fire company for over 25 years.
Ray was involved in his community in other ways. He was the Past President of the Moscow Sportsman Club, and a 4H leader. Ray was an Army veteran. Arlene Kakareka
May 16, 2019
On Thursday, May 16, 2019, Arlene Kakareka, zealous educator, prolific gardener, faithful sister and friend, passed away at the age of 74.
Arlene was born on Oct. 17, 1944, in Scranton, Pa., to Julius and Helen Kakareka. She was valedictorian of her Moscow (now North Pocono) High School class, and received language and teaching degrees from Marywood University. A lifelong resident of Moscow and passionate advocate for public education, she taught French and Latin at North Pocono High School for 35 years.
“Miss Kak,” as her students remember her, was a teacher unlike any other, who kept a raucous classroom where the rules were scant but standards were high. She often donned elaborate costumes depicting mythological characters and encouraged students to as well. She developed the school’s enrichment curriculum, which introduced its mostly-rural students to world-class music and art. Her capacity to devise hilarious Latin riddles appeared infinite and her homemade “yellow dog” cookies were an anticipated favorite on field trips. She often appeared before the school board to advocate for school-wide improvements, espousing that all students could learn and benefit from challenging material. The district’s only Latin teacher, when an injury prevented her from attending school in person, she taught from her living room, via satellite. Ever-devoted to strengthening young minds, Miss Kak incited creativity and argument, and gave her students the freedom to be critical and confidently original.
Arlene also had great appreciation for nature and curated an impressive garden. She was a force for greening the borough, organizing the planting of thousands of trees and earning Moscow a “Tree City USA” designation by the Arbor Day Foundation. She gave a loving home to several pets, including beloved cat Milos and dog Phoebe. She enjoyed unique pieces of art, particularly jewelry, and created much of her own from objects she found. She was also a connoisseur of literature and music, and attended both Woodstock and Live Aid. She was a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena in Moscow. She was an institution in the community and supported others in every way she was able. She will be known in perpetuity for her brilliant mind, her ingenuity, her clever and wry sense of humor and, most of all, her stewardship of Moscow’s young people.
Arlene was preceded in death by her father and mother.
She is survived by her brother, Joseph Kakareka and sister-in-law, Annette, of Fort Myers, Fla.; and countless friends, colleagues and students who carry on her indelible legacy.

Bill was a man with great wit and a tell-it-like-it-is sense of humor. You either loved him, hated him or loved to hate him, but, either way, he made you laugh, and you still considered him a friend. He was an avid New York Yankee and San Francisco 49ers fan. A believer in God, but by no means religious, he enjoyed a good sermon from the comfort of his recliner. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Scranton.

Bud then went on to complete his education, first at Moravian Academy, in Allentown, Pa., then at Bloomsburg University, where he graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. Although he was originally hired as a fifth-grade science teacher at the North Pocono School District, he continued his education at the University of Scranton, where he graduated with a master’s in school administration in 1975. That fall, he was appointed principal of Moscow Elementary Center, eventually moving to the Jefferson Elementary Center, where he remained until his retirement.
Bud’s passion was always the game of golf, and he was a member at the Elmhurst Country Club since 1976, where he loved playing in his weekly leagues and club tournaments. His playing partner for many years was Dr. Daniel West, who he also spent many years with as a part of the Safety Awareness Team at Montage Mountain. We are forever grateful for the friendship that Dan has shown him. As skiing was his other passion, he founded the North Pocono Ski Club with his wife, Diane. He was also a member of the Moscow United Methodist Church and the local Masonic Lodge. Bud was fortunate to live out one of his dreams, which was visiting Scotland. While there, he was able to play at the Old Course at St. Andrew’s, visit his mother’s birthplace and visit a cousin.
In addition to his wife, Bud is survived by his son, Andrew Thomas Walls and his wife, Gina, Hackettstown, N.J.; and his daughter, Maurella Ann Wylie and her husband, Anthony, Jefferson Twp., Pa. He has three lovely grandchildren, whom he adored, Benjamin and Ella Wylie; and Antonia Walls. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Marcia Key, Athens, Ohio; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carter and Joann Davies, Tunkhannock, Pa,; along with their children, Carter Davies, Cleveland, Ohio; and Kate Miller and her husband Robert, Tunkhannock, Pa. Bud also had two great-grandnephews, Brayden and Bryce Miller.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, along with his mother and father-in-law, June Carter and Walter Davies, Elmhurst, Pa.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to The Pines Assisted Living and their staff for all of the outstanding care Bud has received over the past year. A special thank you to his physician, Dr. Christine Stroka, as well as his long-time physician, Dr. Richard Martin. Finally, a special thank you to Allied Services Hospice, who provided compassionate care during Bud’s final days.
Bud will always be remembered as a kind, gentle man who helped shape thousands of young minds in Northeastern Pennsylvania, but, most of all, as a friend, husband and a father whom we can all model ourselves after.

Our Mother was accepting of everyone, if anyone felt as if they were an outcast they could always go to her. She was always there for her family, friends and any strangers that crossed her path. She was a very empathetic and sympathetic person. She would bear anyone’s burden to help them feel some relief. She would give and share whatever she had. She was adventurous and willing to take on a new project without hesitation. Whether it be teaching herself to bake and decorate wedding cakes, running a ceramics business out of the house or re-upholstering the living room furniture, she dove in head first and figured things out as she went. Our Mom was also known by everyone that attended any youth or high school sporting events. She was never afraid to vocalize her opinion on the officiating or yell in support for the kids competing. She was an open book, willing to talk to and listen to anyone. Sometimes, when discussing things she could be a little too candid, but we all knew we could go to her when something was on our minds. We could also always rely on Mom to convince Dad that we needed something or should be allowed to go somewhere. On the surface this might be taken as being too soft or gullible, but that’s not the reason. It was because of her immense love for us and her desire to do anything possible to see us happy. She was a daughter, a sister, a friend, a wife, a mother, an aunt and a grandmother. She did each of them with everything she had and the best she could.
We would like to thank all of the medical professionals that assisted in the care of our mother, Dr. Weinstein, Dr. DeWarren, Dr. Kishori, VNA Home Health and Allied Hospice Services.
Funeral services will be conducted:
Saturday, March 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Duffy & Snowdon Funeral Home, 401 Church St., Moscow, Pa.

John ‘Fonce’ Reed
February 13, 2019
A man who cared little about societal opinions and norms passed away peacefully, surrounded only by the tranquil forces sleep provides.
Although medical records and a birth certificate identified him as “John,” Fonce Reed treaded upon life the way he wished. Quirky and energetic, he formed a personal belief regarding how a person should live, and he abided by that notion until his last breath.
Fonce had little linguistic filter and exhibited inner expressions with complete conviction, despite whether those in proximity shared the same: Respect was met with respect, as contempt was met with contempt. And that is precisely why the people lucky enough to call him family and/or friend felt unprecedented love and adoration for him.
A working man from an early age, Fonce engaged in his endeavors with attention to detail and a renowned fervor that he eventually instilled into his two beloved children, Steven and Shawn (Foncie).
Now that he has exited this world, Fonce leaves behind a trail of sadness, as he is mourned. However, knowing him, he’s laughing all the way into the outstretched arms of his hero and father, Bucky Reed, and mother, Maureen. Additionally, Fonce is undoubtedly relieved to have finally acquired some space between himself and his sister, Kay, to whom he is probably throwing the middle finger at this very second.
Besides the previously mentioned family members, Marguerite Gibbs, cousins, aunts, uncles and a plethora of friends survive this once vibrant human being.
When the end descended, worldly disease withered Fonce away, and this was not the same man that would light up his muscle car to amuse a 4-year-old child or sing cheerily about a meatball that rolled out the door. No. In fact, it can be guaranteed that that was the last possible thing he wished — not because it captured his life, but because it elicited such negative emotion.
Tears and anguished cries emanating from crunched abdomens certainly do not define the totality of this man’s life. The abundant smiles and laughs, mixed with looks of disbelief, characterize Fonce Reed’s 58 years. Regardless of his smaller stature, Fonce Reed shall occupy a piece of our collective memories as a giant, simply because his attitude matched the same.
Mass will be celebrated:
Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Mary, Mother of God Parish, 316 William St., Scranton, Pa.
Friends may call on:
Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave., Scranton, Pa.
